It takes a bit of believing that one supreme being created the universe out of nothing. On the other hand it takes a bit of believing that it just created itself. But there it is! And here we are, right there inside it.

Like the proverbial elephant on the doorstep, the Universe has to be accounted for. Some believe in the so-called “molecules-to-man” approach: a primordial “soup”, random mutations, and natural selection. Others find this most unconvincing (and even unscientific!) and see instead evidence of design, and hence a Designer. Why is there Something rather than Nothing? Why does the Universe obey rules? Whichever way you look there is mystery and miracle (even if Darwinian Evolutionists try to disguise it inside a singularity they call the “Big Bang”).

And if there is a being we call God, why should we care? I suppose the short answer is that things go wrong when we don’t. Not believing in God is not a neutral position; it isn’t the absence of faith but the replacing of one, ultimately unverifiable, belief system with another.

And even harder to believe is that this supreme being we call God came to earth, as Jesus of Nazareth, in order to mend the broken relationship with mankind … and was killed for his pains on the cross just outside Jerusalem. Did he succeed?

These are big questions! But the answers could not be more important. There are nominal atheists who have never fully thought through the implications of their faith, just as there are nominal christians. God tells us through the bible that, “my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8). However, that does not mean that he hasn’t provided answers for those who have eyes to see, and ears to hear, and a heart to understand.
